NEW YORK, NY – The Yeshiva Men’s Soccer team came to play Thursday night, scoring the first three goals of the night, enroute to an 8-2 victory over Webb Institute. The Maccabees outshot their opponent 25-18, and allowed only 9 shots on goal. With the win, Yeshiva improves to 2-3 on the young season.
Jon Hagler (Monsey, NY/Kushner) opened the scoring for Yeshiva in the 9th minute, scoring past a diving goalkeeper. Shai Barel (Boca Raton, FL/Weinbaum Yeshiva) followed suit 2 minutes later, as he sent a shot into the upper left corner just out of reach of the tender. The shot came from outside the box, looking the whole time as if it were too high. A two on one breakaway for the Maccabees resulted in their 3rd goal of the half, when Yaniv Lautman (Cleveland, OH/Fuchs Mizrachi) took a beautiful lead pass from Zach Stern (Columbus, OH/Columbus Torah Academy) and sent it to the back of the net. The half ended with Yeshiva up 3-0.
The second half began slower for the Maccabees, as they gave up a goal only two minutes in. However, Yaniv Lautman answered the goal with his second of the game, once again assisted by Zach Stern. The pair were not done either, as Lautman scored once more off a rebound from a Webb save, and Stern assisted for his third time to David Banoun (Paris, France/Pospeur). The 6-2 lead in the 67th minute was short lived, as Stern bent a corner kick into the goal, touching nobody for his second goal of the season. Daniel Belecen (Caracas, Venezuela/Talmud Tora Sinai) added the final YU goal in the 82nd minute, assisted beautifully across the field by Shai Barel.
Mark Rocklin (Rochester, NY/Halb) was in goal for all 90 minutes, stopping 7 shots. Each team took 4 corners while Webb was whistled offsides 13 times.
The Maccabees will take the field on Sunday at 6PM against Farmingdale State. The game will be played at Maritime College in the Bronx, NY.
