Chana Gila Ovits Named to the EWFC Woman of the Year Honorable Mention Team

NEW YORK, NY – Chana Gila Ovits, a senior Epee specialist, is one of six student-athletes named to the EWFC Woman of the Year Honorable Mention squad as announced by the EWFC at the end of last week. This is the third year the EWFC has named a Woman of the Year and an Honorable Mention team.

Ovits is one of only two fencers that specialize in Epee to be named to the team; the other was the EWFC Woman of the Year (Emma Buckingham, Haverford College). Chana had a great season for the Maccabees, placing 9th at the EWFC individual championships and an NCAA qualifier. Following this season, she was also named to the 2nd team All-Conference.

Chana Gila Ovits is a biology major, who excels in the classroom when she is not fencing. She is an Anne Schieber Honors Program student, a biology club member, and a Dean's list member all 4 years of college (amongst many other academic achievements). Outside of school, she volunteers her time at the Hadassah Hospital, the Israeli Red Cross, or the emergency room at Bellevue Hospital. She is currently training to volunteer at the Beth Israel Hospice.

The annual EWFC Woman of the Year award is implemented to recognize the fencer(s) who “best combines the triple standards of excellence in academics, success in athletics, and participation in extracurricular activities”. The winner of the award, and the honorable mention team, is voted on by the EWFC's head coaches.
