NEW YORK, NY – The baseball team celebrated senior day between games of their double header against Baruch College Tuesday night, moments after capturing their first win of the season. The team defeated Baruch 4-3 in game one, scoring all 4 runs in the third inning after trailing 3-0. Baruch came back and won game 2 by a final of 11-4.
Of the 10 starters for the Maccabees in game 1, seven were seniors being recognized for their efforts throughout their careers. The lineup proved to be what the Maccabees needed, as the starters played all 7 innings and helped the team to the season’s first win.
David Kesselman threw all 7 innings for the complete game win, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs (0 earned), 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
Howard Avner went 2-3 in the game with a double and an RBI.
Jeremy Schwartz, one of the 3 non-senior starters, was 3-3 with two doubles and 2 RBI. All 4 runs came in the bottom of the third inning. Yeshiva ended the game with 7 hits.
Between games, the teams’ 9 seniors were honored with stories of their careers and words from the coaching staff. Their play and presence will surely be missed, and the coaching staff and athletic department wish them success in their future endeavors. The 2010 baseball seniors are:

In the second game, Baruch jumped out to an early lead and held on to it with strong pitching and clutch hitting. The Maccabees scored two runs in each of the 6th and 7th innings to close the game.
Seth Fein and
Adam Volk were each 2-4 in the game. Fein tripled to open the final inning, then scored on an
Eli Langbaum pinch hit single.
Nachum Twersky batted in two on a single up the middle.
Benjamin Susswein was the starting pitcher, going 4 innings and giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits. He struck out 1 in 24 batters faced. Joshua Pransky came in for 2 innings and struck out 2. Dani Wizenfeld closed the game out, facing 6 batters and striking out 1.
Before the game yesterday, the team was selected as the Skyline Sportsmanship winner, as voted on by the conference coaches. This is the third consecutive sportsmanship award given to the Maccabees baseball team.
There is one more game remaining on the baseball schedule; tonight against the College of Staten Island. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 start on the road.
