Women's Cross Country Wins Its First Ever HVIAC Women's Cross Country Championship

RESULTS

ANNADALE ON HUDSON, N.Y.— It was a day of history for the women's cross country team on Sunday as they claimed first place of eight schools at the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) championship. The Maccabees, with 41 points, finished 14 points ahead of runner-up Albany College of Health and Pharmacy, for their first ever HVIAC women's cross country championship.

"There are no words to express how proud I am of this team. This is a historic occasion, the first Championship for our women's program. I can tell you from personal experience, I was positioned at the finish of the race and not a single runner left anything out on that course," said Director of Athletics, Joe Bednarsh. "Since becoming Athletic Director in 2005 I have not yet had an opportunity to raise a banner celebrating a women's championship and I am eagerly looking forward to doing so."

Stephanie Greenberg was the top finisher for the Maccabees. The reigning HVIAC Runner of the Week finished third overall of 66 runners, zipping through the five kilometers at Bard College in 19:26. Talya Rohde was right behind Greenberg, finishing fourth overall in 19:34. Sarah Mizrachi was the third Maccabee to cross the finish line to round out the top five, finishing fifth in 20:24. Corrie Mathias was the fourth Yeshiva runner to complete the race and thirteenth overall in 21:33, while Rena Thomas rounded out the top five for the Maccabees while finishing eighteenth overall in 21:52. Esther Shollar and Sarah Lazarus finished sixth and seventh respectively for Yeshiva and twenty second and twenty third overall, as Shollar finished in 22:07 and Lazarus in 22:36. Ruthie Heller finished twenty-seventh in 22:58 and Rebecca van Bemmelen was twenty-ninth in 23:14. Julianna Wasserman was thirty-second overall in 23:37, and Shoshana Mond was fortieth in 24:13.

After Yehsiva's 41 points and ACHP's 54 points, finishing in third was Pratt Institute with 62 points, followed by Sarah Lawrence College with 72 points. The College of New Rochelle was fifth with 140 points, followed by the King's College with 184 points. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was seventh with 189 points, and Culinary Institute of America was eighth with 219 points.

Yehsiva will look for another championship next week, as the Maccabees will compete next Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park for the Skyline Championship.
